A city of central Egypt on the eastern bank of the Nile River and site of the Temple of Luxor, Luxor was once the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes and great capital of Egypt during the New Kingdom.

Described as the "world's greatest open air museum", Luxor is a modern day city sitting on and around the site of the ancient city of Thebes. North of Luxor are the spectacular Temples of Karnak, a city of temples built over 2000 years ago which combines sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons and obelisks, all dedicated to the Theban gods. In ancient times, Karnak was known as Ipet-isut, 'The most select of places' and was considered to be most important place of worship in ancient Egypt. The Temples of Karnak are believed to be the largest surviving religious complex in the world.
